Knockdown, Orange Peel or Smooth? A Guide to Ceiling Textures

Ceiling texture does two jobs: it gives a room a look, and it hides small imperfections in the drywall underneath. Which one you pick changes the feel of the whole space, so it is worth understanding the options before you commit.

Knockdown is the most requested texture we spray in Minnesota homes. Joint compound is sprayed on in droplets, allowed to set for a few minutes, then flattened with a wide blade. The result is a soft, mottled pattern with flat plateaus. It hides imperfections well and still reads as modern.

Orange peel is subtler — a fine spray pattern with no knockdown pass, so it stays slightly bumpy like the skin of an orange. It is the go-to for newer builds and for walls as well as ceilings. It hides less than knockdown but feels cleaner and more contemporary.

Popcorn, or acoustic texture, is the heavy sprayed-on texture common in homes built between the 1950s and the 1980s. It absorbs sound and hides a lot, but it dates a room immediately and it collects dust. Most of our popcorn work these days is removal, not application.

Smooth, or Level 5, is exactly what it sounds like: no texture at all, just perfectly flat drywall. It is the most expensive option because there is nowhere to hide — every seam needs a full skim coat and careful sanding. Under raking light from a window, a real Level 5 ceiling is unmistakable.

Stomp and splatter textures are hand-applied patterns with more visible character. They show up in older homes and in spaces where somebody wanted something distinctive.

One more thing worth knowing: if you are repairing a section of an existing textured ceiling, the texture has to be matched, not just approximated. We sample the existing pattern before we spray so the patch blends instead of announcing itself.
